Mind Over Movement - Run the ABP Southampton Marathon for mental health Charity Solent Mind

Local Charity Partner Solent Mind has been a strong supporter of the ABP races for the better part of the last 10 years. Between 2023 and 2024, their high-quality mental health services provided support in over 48,000 user interactions. Join Solent this year in a mission to put mind alongside mission.

A message from Solent:

We all know that running brings lots of benefits for our mental health. From releasing endorphins and serotonin, to improving sleep-quality and self-esteem (when you hit that personal best!).

And while running the ABP Southampton Marathon is a big challenge, running for Solent Mind means your hard work and dedication goes directly towards helping local people across Hampshire with their mental health and wellbeing.

Whether we’re supporting people out-of-hours in our crisis centres or delivering groups and activities at our wellbeing centres, as your local Mind, we offer a range of support services across Hampshire. Our aim is to make sure everyone who needs it has someone they can turn to in a supportive safe space where people can be themselves and feel that they are listened to without judgement.

Meet our runners

Sam Clissold is running the marathon for Solent Mind for his second year now. Having used our services himself, he wants to help raise awareness, encouraging others to reach out for support and help start those all-important conversations:

“When I have suffered from poor mental health, having people to talk to has made the world of difference. I would like to help ensure this continues to be available to others when they need it, and to get more people talking about their mental health.”

Mike Blundell is also running for his second year and wants to fight the stigma associated with talking about mental health. Mike feels that charities like Solent Mind are often overlooked:

“They provide some of the best support at people’s absolute time of need… There is still a massive stigma (especially with men’s mental health) that they need to bottle up their problems and stuff it back into the deepest part of their minds.

Mike continued, “Having experienced my own challenges with mental health, it’s not an understatement to say that running probably saved my life as it gave me time to reflect and come to terms with my own challenges. It’s all too easy to get overwhelmed by any aspect of life and running made me realise it’s completely acceptable to make time for yourself and focus on what really matters.”
