Our Top Five Tips for Running in the Rain

Winter is here and with it come those wet and windy storms we know so well. But if you’ve already signed up for the 2025 ABP Southampton Marathon or Half Marathon, you’re probably determined not to let a bit of rain stop you. Sticking to your training plan, rain or shine, is all part of the challenge. To help you out, here are our top five tips for running in the rain.

1. Wear the Right Clothing

Staying comfortable starts with dressing wisely. Swap cotton for lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics that dry quickly and won’t cling to you. A good waterproof or water-resistant jacket is your best friend when it’s wet and windy and don’t forget a cap to keep the rain out of your eyes. Dressing appropriately can make all the difference to your comfort during a rainy run.

2. Choose the Right Shoes

Wet roads and puddles mean slippery surfaces, so make sure your running shoes have good grip. If your regular trainers are prone to soaking up water, consider investing in a pair of water-resistant running shoes or wear older shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy.

3. Be Visible

Rain often reduces visibility, not just for you but for others around you. Stay safe by wearing bright, reflective clothing or LED armbands, especially if you’re running near traffic or in dim light. Being visible isn’t just about safety, but it also helps you feel more confident during your run.

4. Plan Your Route

Whilst running in the rain can be refreshing, t’s important to choose your route wisely. Avoid areas prone to flooding or heavy mud and stick to well-lit, familiar paths. If the weather looks particularly rough, consider a shorter route closer to home in case you need to cut it short.

5. Protect Your Valuables

From your phone to your keys, it’s worth taking extra steps to protect your essentials. Use a waterproof running belt or zip-lock bag to keep your belongings safe from the rain. You’ll thank yourself when everything stays dry and working.

Training for a marathon is about dedication and braving the rain shows just how committed you are. Follow these tips to stay safe, comfortable and motivated on your rainy runs.
