Our Top Tips for Running in the Wind

It is looking gusty in Southampton while you are out on the route! Please see below some top tips for running in the wind - see you on Sunday!

1. Try to remain relaxed when running

A common instinct in windy conditions is to tense up, this causes you to apply pressure to your muscles which tires you quicker. Take deep breaths when encountering strong winds, straighten your posture and release all tension. Find a relaxed stride with a steady arm swing to set you off on the right track.

2. Dress Appropriately

Opt for fitted attire instead of loose shirts, shorts, hoods, or excessive layers to prevent your clothing from flapping in the wind. Choose streamlined, moisture-wicking garments that offer both warmth and breathability to avoid overheating - remember that you WILL warm up as you start running.

Adjustable layers like arm sleeves, buffs, and gloves come in handy as they can be easily adapted. Meanwhile, those with long hair should consider opting for a simple ponytail, braid, or tight bun with a secure headband to keep hair away from the face and tangle-free.

3. Effort, not pace (slower the tempo)

Ensure you’re running by perceived effort, if you push yourself too hard, you will fatigue sooner.

4. Mindset

Minus the physical relaxation, it is important to avoid a negative outlook on the conditions of the day. Remember, harder does not mean impossible. At one point, we all had to train in the rain, wind, or potentially both.

We wish you all the best for this Sunday and we are looking forward to seeing you on the Start Line! - Events team
