University of Southampton Students Running for a Cause at the 2025 ABP Southampton Marathon

The ABP Southampton Marathon has always been about more than just running—it’s about community, resilience, and making a difference. For a group of University of Southampton students, this year’s event is an opportunity to do just that. They’re taking on the marathon to raise money for their friend, Danniella, who needs a specialised wheelchair to help her manage her condition, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.

Danniella’s Story

Danniella’s life is heavily impacted by Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a condition where the collagen in her joints doesn’t form correctly. This causes extreme pain and mobility challenges, making everyday activities difficult. Frequent joint dislocations and the effort required to move around mean she has to take regular breaks to manage the pain.

A wheelchair would be life-changing for Danniella, giving her greater independence and improving her quality of life. Inspired by her strength and determination, five of her friends decided to come together and fundraise for her cause by participating in the 2025 ABPSouthampton Marathon. Abigail, Aaron, Ellie and Harry will be running in the ABPSouthampton Half Marathon and Bailey is taking on the full 26.2 miles.

Bailey’s Previous Marathon Experience

For Bailey, this isn’t his first time taking on the ABP Southampton Marathon. His 2024marathon journey was filled with ups and downs. Injuries and setbacks have shaped his training experience, but his determination to make a difference has kept him going.

"Christmas before my first marathon, I injured my ankle on a 26km run through theDevonshire countryside," he recalls. "From then, my training was stunted, and even participating in the Sunday run days was a struggle. Despite this, I was determined not to give up as I was raising money for the Cancer Immunology Fund."

Against the odds, he completed the marathon with a time of 4:41 and raised over £800 for charity. For 2025, he’s back with renewed focus, better training, and a new cause close to his heart: supporting Danniella.
